cimetidine [si-met´ĭ-dēn] an antagonist of histamine H2receptors, inhibiting the action of histamine at cell surface receptors of the gastric parietal cells and reducing basal gastric acid secretion and secretion stimulated by food, histamine, gastrin, caffeine, and insulin. It is used for the short-term (two months) treatment and, at reduced dosage. Cimetidine definition is - a histamine analog C10H16N6S that inhibits gastric acid secretion and is used especially in the treatment of duodenal ulcers.

Cimetidine and famotidine slightly reduce the O 2 - or H 2 O 2 production of neutrophils in a dose-dependent manner, although ranitidine fails to do so. Cimetidine inhibits nitric-oxide-associated nitrate production in a horse soft-tissue inflammation model. It decreases interleukin 6 production by human keratinocytes. Cimetidine is a histamine H 2-receptor antagonist which rapidly inhibits both basal and stimulated gastric secretion of acid and reduces pepsin output.. Cimetidine is indicated in the treatment of duodenal and benign gastric ulceration, including that associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, recurrent and stomal ulceration, oesophageal reflux disease and other .

Enhancing anti-tumor cell-mediated responses, cimetidine blocks histamine's ability to stimulate suppressor T lymphocyte activity and to inhibit natural killer (NK) cell activity and interleukin-2 production. Cimetidine also may inhibit tumor growth by suppressing histamine's growth-factor activity and blocking histamine-induced.

Cimetidine is a drug that blocks the production of acid by acid-producing cells in the stomach and can be administered orally, IM or IV. It belongs to a class of drugs called H2 (histamine-2) blockers that also includes ranitidine (), nizatidine (), and famotidine ().Histamine is a naturally-occurring chemical that stimulates cells in the stomach (parietal cells) to produce acid.

Sorkin EM, Darvey DL. The literature on cimetidine drug interactions has been thoroughly reviewed. Several different mechanisms have been proposed for cimetidine-related drug interactions.

These mechanisms include: (1) impaired hepatic drug metabolism due to inhibition of hepatic microsomal enzymes, (2 Cited by:
